Five Years in the Making: Second Avenue Restoration

The DISTRICT and the Nashville Historical Foundation (formerly the MHC Foundation) came together immediately after the catastrophic bomb explosion on Second Avenue on Christmas Day 2020 to raise funds for pressing needs.  Those have included the salvaging and storing of as many materials as possible, advising on stabilization, and hiring an expert in 19th century brick buildings to assist owners with structural analysis.

As part of the healing of the badly damaged infrastructure, MHC is writing text telling the street’s story via granite pavers to be embedded in the brick sidewalks between Commerce and Church Streets. And as a step toward the future, the funds raised jointly are helping to solve the problems of waste disposal that have plagued First and Second Avenues. The Nashville Historical Foundation continues to support these rebuilding and restoration efforts.
