Dr. Carole Bucy named Distinguished Professor at Cumberland University

Since 2011, Dr. Carole Bucy has served as Davidson County Historian. She holds degrees in history from Baylor University, George Peabody College, and Vanderbilt University where she earned her Ph.D. in U.S. History. As a longtime advocate for local and state history, she is a regular speaker on Tennessee and Nashville history in all parts of the state to a variety of organizations and groups.

Carole regularly teaches classes for the public known as “Nashville 101 and 102” and other topics as a way to help local Nashvillians learn and appreciate the city’s history. For several years, in partnership with the Tennessee Historical Society, Dr. Bucy had taught online and in-person classes on topics related to state history: “Tennessee 101” and “Tennessee 102.” Attendees range from Davidson Country residents to individual spanning 45 states and 4 countries.  

A prolific speaker and writer, Carole is active in Davidson County and across the state and nation. She is the author of the textbook used in 4th and 5th Social Studies classes in Metro Schools as well as other state school districts. She also serves on the Advisory Board of the Tennessee Historical Quarterly. Dr. Bucy is considered the foremost authority on the history of Nashville and Davidson County.

In 2023, Dr. Carole Bucy was appointed “Distinguished University Professor,” at Cumberland University, after a long career as a history professor at Volunteer State Community College. “We are truly honored to have Dr. Bucy, a renowned professional and educator, join our Cumberland Family,” said University President Paul C.
